Happy new fiscal year!
Splashed out above beyond my broadband cap and downloaded Ubuntu 6.1'Edgy Eft' Live DVD, and thus (kind of - the full res was a LAMP server too, plus Ubuntu on i386, PPC, and just maybe Motorola68K) fulfilled the '07NewYrs'Res.
On a PB_G4-867_12" its ridiculously fast if you just run FireFox (but then in Mac OS X 10.4 I've a stupidly large iCal with amongst other things SheernessTideTables(MacTides) which slows things down bigtime but_is_worth_it_to_me)

Banged-up blogger freed
After the longest stretch ever served in the joint for refusing to disclose a source, blogger/activist Josh Wolf is a free man.
Wolf spent 226 days, nearly 7 1/2 months, in the Federal Penitentiary in Dublin, California after refusing to testify before a grand jury and withholding footage of a 2005 anarchist rally in San Francisco from federal prosecutors.

Tunnels, Pylons and Towers
What I don't really understand here is why pylons are bad, yet its improvement to replace them on the skyline with towers: 41 storeys at 150 Stratford High St and the Rogers Hotel Tower proposed immediately north of Stratford International (both conveniently outside of the PDA Planning Area). Or are there up-to-date visions which don't include these big things?

Magic Box Imp on 128-bit WEP secured network
This is maybe old hat for some of you: Set up one of these today and its (a really gorgeous bit of) consumerkit which does this:

RTFM'd twice without finding out how to enter data - OK I'm a Luddite and I didn't know how to operate the shuttle wheel thingy on an iPod, so I had to work it out - the clients were wanting it done, and of course hadn't fore-warned me (they're wealthy so its not an issue for them {and it helps fund my probono stuff}:)!
And, oh yeah, mercy, halley-loo-jah, I'd never before assigned a fixed IP on an oldish Netgear(DG824M) for an InternetRadioDevice, nor defined Services from which to create Rules for the Firewall. (Last did this sort of thing in the CiscoLab, first time out in the field.) Don't ask why, but I didn't try googling for any search string at the time (would've done, and asked around too, had I been fore-warned of course). Anyway, had the thing up and running for them in less than 3 hours.
It looks like this:

BUT, {caveat: i_was_out_on_learn_as_you_earn}, on closer inspection:
Aside from the the ridiculous amount of time it took to key in the 128BIt Hex password numerous times (Configuration is a little like snakes and ladders) I wasn't able to find any means by which to save changes step by step, AND in fact my suspicion is that if you unplug the thing and re-locate it, it loses its config and you have to start again {[{[85 year old client refers to email instructions from my good self, steps through each of the hoops in turn, goes straight back to Go a number of times, calls me on the telephone at which point I-flat-refuse-to-even-attempt-to-Try_To_Talk_Through-over-the-landline}]}]).
Client is calling their busy helpline tomorrow to try to establish whether in fact the configuration can be saved at all, and whether perhaps my suspicion outlined above is groundless.

April fools
When is a reedbed not a reedbed?...
When its the Paralympic Welcome Ceremony Area!
Before, in Games Mode its a reedbed, as part of their flood Mitigation planning one assumes, the very one they're replacing Red Ken's Newt pond with. Afterwards as Legacy its a reedbed too, but during the Paralympics its to be the Welcome Ceremony Area. There's more to see on Wikimapia at:
